Editing

If you are you writing a novel or a book of creative nonfiction, Ruth’s editing expertise will guide you toward a polished manuscript.

Find answers to the following questions:

Is my beginning strong enough to hold a reader’s attention?
Have I been clear, logical, and consistent throughout?
Did I break any writing rules, and if so, did I break them for the right reasons?
Does my manuscript convey what I hoped it would?
Is my manuscript polished and ready for an agent or publisher?
Am I ready to work with an editor?

Two levels of writer support are offered:

FULL MANUSCRIPT EDIT*

A thorough review of your draft manuscript includes:

  • formal summary response report;
  • ms marked to note specifics (i.e. typos, grammar, and syntax errors);
  • substantive edit of structure and plot including logic, productive use of chapters, and overall pacing;
  • review of character and setting effectiveness in conveying your story;
  • review of stylistic techniques, including figurative language;
  • response to thematic elements, and general effectiveness;
  • nonfiction edits, include matching chapters and headings with table of contents, review appendices, footnotes and sidebars, as appropriate.

FEEDBACK SESSIONS**

A thorough reading of the first 10,000 words includes:

  • typed response to the work ‘thus far’;
  • questions and suggestions to clarify overall direction;
  • ‘light’ edit to note strengths or weaknesses in plot, structure, and character development.

*Not all writers are ready for a full edit. A feedback session offers an option to writers seeking general direction and comments on a work in progress.
**Feedback sessions are not recommended for developing writers who are still at work on their first draft.
